Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Classroom Programs

The Canadian Heart Association’s PALS education programs integrate the BLS skills with the advanced knowledge needed to effectively participate in or manage a resuscitation event for your pediatric patients. The program emphasizes the importance of preventing cardiac arrest in pediatric patients, early and continuous, high-quality CPR, and high-performing teams. The course reflects science and education from the 2020 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Who Should Attend A PALS Classroom-Based Program?

The Canadian Heart Association’s PALS program is designed for healthcare professionals who either participate in or manage resuscitation events for pediatric patients. This can include but is not limited to personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, dentists, paramedics, and others who need a PALS course completion card for employment requirements.

What Will You Learn During The PALS Program?

You will…

  • Utilize the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments.
  • Perform high-quality BLS, including emphasizing early chest compressions and integrating early defibrillation.
  • Recognize and manage pediatric patients experiencing a respiratory event
  • Recognize and manage pediatric patients experiencing a shock event
  • Recognize and manage pediatric patients experiencing an arrhythmia event
  • Recognize and manage pediatric patients experiencing a cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation efforts or transfer of care.
  • Manage a pediatric patient who obtains a return of spontaneous circulation.
  • Model effective communication as a team member or team leader.
  • Evaluate your team’s resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest utilizing a continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to your team
  • Recognize the impact and importance of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  • Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve pediatric patient outcomes.

 How Will I Be Evaluated?

During the Canadian Heart Association’s PALS program, you will be given access to an integrated online evaluation system. It is through the use of this system that you will be evaluated. Evaluation happens in real-time with the program. You can access the system using your own smartphone or use one of our loaner iPads. Free wifi will be provided at the course. Through the use of this interactive evaluation system, we can guarantee that you will successfully complete the program and earn your PALS Provider Certificate.

What Certificates Will I Earn At The End Of The Program?

  • The Canadian Heart Association BLS Provider Certificate, valid for one year.
  • The Canadian Heart Association PALS Provider Certificate, valid for two years.

How Long Is The Canadian Heart Association’s PALS Classroom Program?

  • The PALS Classroom Program is 8 hours long. It can be delivered in one day.
